Interpreting and Measuring Indicators of Rangeland Health

Participants in this 3.5 day course will learn how to apply the “Interpreting Indicators of Rangeland Health” qualitative evaluation protocol and learn how to quantify (measure) selected indicators.

This course is being held tuition free for the purpose of encouraging the use of this Rangeland Health Assessment tool by federal, state agencies, and others. Participants are responsible for their travel expenses, including transportation to the classroom, meals and lodging. We will carpool to field sites.

Strategic and Targeting Grazing as Vegetation management tools-A Symposium

Hosted by the Northern Rockies Fire Science Network and US Forest Service Rocky Mountain Research Station, this webinar discussion is the last of a four-part series from the authors of the synthesis, A comprehensive guide to fuel management practices for dry mixed conifer forests in the northwestern United States (Jain et al. 2010).  The authors will share and discuss key findings from selected chapters in order to promote dialogue, mentoring, and increased understanding of the challenges, opportunities, and techniques for incorporating fuel treatments that promote resilient dry mixed conifer forests in the western U.S.

Integrated Fuel Treatment Field Trip

Priest River Experimental Forest, ID

The Northern Rockies Fire Science Network and the USFS Rocky Mountain Research Station invite managers and scientists to an integrated fuel treatment field trip at the Priest River Experimental Forest in North Idaho. The field trip will focus on multidisciplinary research to help develop and evaluate alternative restoration/fuel treatments that are ecologically sound, socially acceptable, and economically viable. Scientists and managers will discuss these approaches and determine how they may meet some of the challenges managers face.  The field trip will be led by Terrie Jain, Russell Graham, and Andrew Hudak, all who are Research Foresters with the USFS Rocky Mountain Research Station in Moscow, Idaho.
